Play & Development

6 picks · Ten minutes of independent play is a gift.

A simple bouncer is a safe place to put your baby down while you shower; it is for awake, supervised use, not sleep. Buy one secondhand if clean and sound. Skip premium wooden gyms, swings and sit-in walkers.

Play Gym / Activity Mat — A floor mat with toys hanging overhead★ Top pick

Play Gym / Activity Mat

LoveveryFisher-Price

A floor mat with toys hanging overhead.

Put baby on it while you need both hands. Hanging toys give them something to look at, kick and grab; a blanket works for tummy time, and some babies reject play gyms.

Bouncer or Baby Seat — Lightweight, fold-flat bouncer for putting baby down★ Top pick

Bouncer or Baby Seat

BabyBjörn Bliss

Lightweight, fold-flat bouncer for putting baby down.

The other place to put a baby down. It folds flat and goes room to room while you shower or cook. A cheaper bouncer does the same job, and some babies hate them.

Sensory & Teething Toys — High-contrast, crinkly, chewable◆ Budget pick

Sensory & Teething Toys

SassyManhattan Toy

High-contrast, crinkly, chewable.

Newborns see high-contrast black and white far better than pastels. Brightly coloured, crinkly toys give them something to grasp, mouth and bat at. Buy a few types, not a drawerful.

Board Books — Thick-paged books that survive chewing✧ Underrated

Board Books

Various

Thick-paged books that survive chewing.

Reading from the beginning has strong evidence behind it. Board pages survive chewing and drool; paper ones last one afternoon. Borrow them from the library if you want variety without filling your shelves.

Stacking Cups & Rings — Stacking cups and rings for years of play◆ Budget pick

Stacking Cups & Rings

Fisher-PriceSassy

Stacking cups and rings for years of play.

They start as grasp-and-mouth toys, then become cups for filling, bath play and tower-building. They nest for storage and need no batteries, so one cheap set stays useful as play changes.

Push Walker Wagon — A push walker wagon for cruising practice

Push Walker Wagon

Radio FlyerVTech

A push walker wagon for cruising practice.

This gives a baby something to hold while cruising, without the seated position of a baby walker. It is a toy, not a walking shortcut, and many babies manage without one.

Get a bouncer secondhand

Use is short and unpredictable. Some babies ignore them. A used one costs far less, works the same, and you can resell it again. Light wear does not change the bounce or the safety harness.

Play & Development: what parents work out the hard way

Advice that came up again and again — the practical things nobody puts on a box. Where a count is shown, it is how many separate parents independently gave that same advice.

  • Get a bouncer secondhand

Use is short and unpredictable. Some babies ignore them. A used one costs far less, works the same, and you can resell it again. Light wear does not change the bounce or the safety harness.

  • Buy a swing secondhand

Swings are used for a short window and some babies refuse them. Buying used avoids paying full price for an item you may use for weeks. You can often resell for close to what you paid.

  • Buy bouncers secondhand, then pass them on

Babies outgrow bouncers quickly—often once they roll or hit 9 kg—so they see only a few months of use. Frames and fabrics wipe clean, so used ones are usually like-new, and you recoup cost by reselling.

  • Use a blanket for tummy time

Tummy time just needs a clean, grippy surface with a little padding. A large blanket gives the same support as a mat, covers more floor, and goes straight in the wash after spit‑ups.

  • Buy board and picture books secondhand

Board books are wipeable and durable, so used copies work the same. Thrift prices are pennies on the pound, letting you build a rotation cheaply for teething, bath reads, and constant re-reads.

  • Skip the MamaRoo swing

It’s bulky and pricey for what is essentially a powered bouncer. Many babies dislike its motion, and it isn’t safe for sleep, so you get a large footprint with narrow use.

Play & Development: common questions

What toys does a newborn need?

Almost none. A play gym for tummy time and a couple of high‑contrast black‑and‑white cards or soft toys cover the first three months. Newborn vision is limited to about 8–12 inches and strong contrast, so pastel toys are largely wasted early on.

How much tummy time does a baby need?

Start with a few minutes several times a day from the first week, building to about an hour a day in total by three months. It builds the neck and shoulder strength needed for rolling and sitting, and reduces the risk of a flat spot. Always supervised, and always while awake.

Are baby walkers safe?

Seated baby walkers are banned outright in Canada and discouraged by paediatric bodies elsewhere. They cause falls and do not help babies learn to walk. A push walker, which a standing baby holds and pushes, is the safe alternative and does help.
